Owning a Vacation Rental on the Nicoya Peninsula
The southern Nicoya Peninsula draws visitors for its beaches, surf towns, wildlife and wellness retreats. For many owners, renting the home while they are away helps cover the costs of owning in paradise. Several of the homes we list today are already earning income on Airbnb and VRBO.
What makes a home rent well
- Easy access: a short drive from the ferry or a local airstrip.
- Air conditioning, reliable internet and a well equipped kitchen.
- Outdoor living: a pool, a covered terrace and a garden.
- Flexible layouts, such as a main house plus a separate apartment or guesthouse.
- Good photos and quick, friendly communication with guests.
Seasons
The dry season, roughly December through April, is the busiest time for visitors, with the holidays in high demand. The green season brings fewer travelers but lush landscapes, lower prices and guests looking for longer stays, such as remote workers and families.
Plan for the practical side
Short term rentals in Costa Rica are subject to taxes, including value added tax on lodging, and owners are expected to register their activity with the tax authorities. Budget for cleaning, maintenance, pool care and a local property manager if you will not be on site. Check whether a community has rules about rentals before you buy.
Try before you buy
Many of our buyers first came as guests. Staying in a rental for a week is a great way to learn the area and imagine life here. Ask us about our Tambor vacation rentals.
