Paquera, Tambor or Tango Mar: Choosing Your Corner of the Peninsula
The southern Nicoya Peninsula is small enough to explore in a day, yet each community along the coast has its own personality. If you are thinking about buying here, the first decision is usually where. This guide compares the three areas where we have homes for sale and for rent today.
Paquera: value and convenience
Paquera is the working town of the southern peninsula and the arrival point for the car ferry from Puntarenas. It has grocery stores, banks, schools, churches and a medical clinic, and it is where you will find some of the most affordable homes on this part of the coast.
Homes on our list in Paquera start at about US$129,000. Most are about 15 minutes from the ferry terminal and about 15 minutes from several beaches. Buyers who like Paquera usually want everyday convenience, a local Costa Rican community and a lower purchase price, often with the idea of earning rental income.
Tambor: calm water and an airstrip
Tambor sits on Bahía Ballena, a wide bay that is sheltered from the bigger swells found further south. That makes its beaches comfortable for swimming and paddling. Tambor also has a domestic airstrip and access to Cóbano Airport, so San José is a short flight away.
The Los Delfines Golf and Country Club offers gated living with a 9 hole golf course, pickleball courts and a beachfront restaurant. Near the beach, small hotels and vacation homes serve visitors through the high season.
Tango Mar and Villas del Mar: privacy and nature
A little further south, Tango Mar and the neighboring Villas del Mar feel more secluded. Homes are surrounded by tropical forest, with Playa Quizales, the Cocolito waterfall and the Tango Mar golf course close by. Montezuma and Santa Teresa are about 25 minutes away by car, and Cóbano, with its supermarkets and banks, is about 20 minutes.
This is where you find homes with private pools, large gardens and ocean views, from move in ready family homes to estates with direct beach access.
How to choose
- Budget first: Paquera offers the lowest entry prices, Tango Mar the most exclusive settings.
- Think about access: the ferry suits drivers, the airstrips suit frequent flyers.
- Decide how you will use the home: full time living, vacations, or rental income.
- Visit in both the dry and the green season if you can.
We are happy to set up a day of viewings across all three areas so you can feel the difference for yourself.
